Pratt Burnerd workholding chuck

New range of big chucks

Pratt Burnerd International, renowned world-wide as the premier designer and manufacturer of workholding systems for lathes, is introducing a new standard range of big chucks, up to 1m, in response to demand from customers.

Being manufactured at its 5,000 sq m plant in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the company has installed additional machine tools to provide the additional machine capacity necessary.

Director/General Manager Peter Simms said “We have been a market leader in the manufacture of high quality, high accuracy, high productivity chucks and workholding systems for all types of turning and prismatic applications for more than 150 years. We have maintained a successful business by remaining close to our customers, working with them to develop workholding methods which enable them to compete effectively in their market place. We have continually invested in research and development, men and machines in order to achieve that. The big chucks which we are introducing is a reflection of that commitment”.

The new chucks have been developed by Pratt Burnerd’s design engineers, based at its headquarters in Halifax. Working with the latest CAD technology, the department had created a range of ingenious chucks which gives the user minimum set up times, maximum gripping force and weight/size capability combined with ease of use. The chucks are manufactured at the company’s Yorkshire factory using the latest and most appropriate production techniques. New machine tools have been installed to provide additional machine capacity in the already-busy factory and to also to enable the very large chuck bodies to be machined in house.

The Pratt Burnerd manufacturing plant, which also manufactures Crawford Collets and the Dickson Toolpost, was upgraded with an investment of over £3 million some three years ago to create a Centre of Workholding Excellence. Compliant with the highest manufacturing and quality control standards, the plant is organised into dedicated manufacturing cells to ensure production efficiency. A specialist grinding facility was built and equipped with the latest and most appropriate technology for chuck and collet manufacture in 2003. A sophisticated, computerised manufacturing control system ensures efficient production from receipt of order through to dispatch, ensuring that orders can be tracked easily and competently.

The new range of big chucks is offered in sizes up to 1m, though most popular sizes are in the 24” and 36” ranges. Bores up to 10.5”dia are available, particularly relevant to the oil and petroleum industry. The new chuck range is complementary to the other activities of Pratt Burnerd, which offers a standard range of high quality, price competitive chucks and workholding system as well as manufacturing bespoke systems for complex applications. With a profound experience of difficult applications, it has a proven track record world-wide.
