Storming 5-axis VMC solution from Colchester-Harrison
A totally new ‘first’ from Colchester-Harrison is the availability of simultaneous five-axis, high precision vertical machining centre cycles achieved via the latest, high specification Heidenhain or Fanuc control.
The top-of-the-range Storm SV 1100 5X uses a high rigidity Meehanite cast base and saddle with heavy duty THK 45 mm width guideways and oversize guide blocks to provide the perfect platform for combined five-sided approach machining operations in a single cycle.
Added to the international machine tool portfolio of 600 Centre of Shepshed near Loughborough, the Storm SV 1100 5X five-axis VMC has an X-axis travel of 700 mm, Y-axis of 500 mm, Z-axis of 355 mm covered at a rapid traverse rate of 32 m/min as standard or 48 m/min as a higher performance option.
Meanwhile, the tilting A-axis high rigidity trunnion has a sweep of -100o to + 30o to an accuracy of + 3 secs and the 360o rotational C-axis of the 250 mm table is programmable up to 16.7 revs/min, with a repeatability for position within + 2 secs. Full hydraulic locking is employed giving increased rigidity and a two-section worm creates a five times greater contact surface area than normal compound double lead systems. Not only does this system generate higher accuracy and a durability in operation, but it also maintains a backlash tolerance between five and eight microns.
There are two 40 taper spindles available featuring an 11 kW, 12,000 revs/min drive as standard or a higher 15 kW, 15,000 revs/min rated motor as an option. Each spindle is water cooled, uses large ceramic ball bearings for rigidity, longer life and precision machining cycles.
The availability of Heidenhain iTNC 530 control and a Fanuc type unit confirms the type of customer the machine is specified for, one that demands higher accuracy and high functionality from a five-axis machining centre. Inherent in the iTNC 530 control specification is its data transfer capability with 256 block look ahead and jerk-free contouring that maintains high toolpath integrity that matches the rigidity and capability of the machine tool platform.
Conversational programming is included that incorporates manual five-axis tilt plan motion control if required, 3-D workpiece simulation, adaptive feed control and collision monitoring.
